Achievements and Further Challenges in TD-SCDMA VIP Interview Mr. Evan Yu, Chief Executive of COMMIT Incorporated |
||
Recently, TD-SCDMA Forum interviewed Mr. Evan Yu, Chief Executive of COMMIT Incorporated. Mr Yu said that TD-SCDMA is one of the three 3G international standards. After years of efforts, TD-SCDMA has been greatly developed. First of all, this achievement should be attributed to the government¡¯s support, especially in aspects like 3G frequency planning and relevant industry policies. Secondly, the effort of the whole TD-SCDMA supply chain is getting more mature. Currently, the TD industry chain includs standard constitution organizations, system vendors, chipset makers, terminal providers and testing equipment manufacturers, network planning and optimizing organizations, component manufacturers and application developers. In the 2005 TD-SCDMA International Summit held recently in Beijing, important speeches were delivered by Minister Xu Guanhua from Ministry of Science and Technology, Secretary General Zhang Xiaoqiang from National Development and Reform Commission, Minister Lou Qinjian from Ministry of Information Industry and Director Wang Yong from the State-woned Asseets Supervision and Administration Commission. These all indicated the government¡¯s dedication in supporting this industry. 800 representatives from many world renowned domestic and overseas enterprises also attended the Summit. The whole industry is getting more confident about the TD-SCDMA commercialization. We believe that TD-SCDMA is well on the track towards its commercialization. However, Mr. Yu also indicated that the approching commercialization brings TD-SCDMA more challenges in technology, market positioning and its applications. Year 2005 is quite important in TD development. TD technology will be tested in the industrialization testing and will be a main factor influencing 3G license granting. The license granting is the attention focus of the companies who invest on TD R&D. Which operator can be granted the TD license and how will the licenses be granted will greatly influence the R&D decisions of these companies , especially the chipset and terminal makers. Mr. Yu said that all the vendors hope to get more clarified information as soon as possible from the government. Mr. Yu introduced that COMMIT was incorporated in Feb. 2002. Six main investors among all 17 investors of COMMIT are big name companies from nearly all important sectors in the TD-SCDMA supply chain. They are Datang Telecom, Texas Instrument, China Putian, Nokia, LG and Hyper Market International Limited. Currently, the focus of COMMIT¡¯s R&D is the TD-SCDMA terminal products and solutions which can satisfy the market demand, such as digital baseband, analog baseband, RF chipset, physical layter software applications and protocal stack, etc., as well as the reference design of TD-SCDMA terminal based on the above-mentioned chipsets and protocal stacks. COMMIT tries to seek more opportunities through partnership. So far it has established close partner relationships with well known system developers and terminal manufacturers including Datang Mobile, TD Tech, ZTE, China Putian, LG, DBTel, Bird, Lenovo, etc. COMMIT has provided 4 sample phones in the TD industrialization testing. Regarding its R&D strategies, Mr. Yu said COMMIT believes the most important thing is the system stability and the mass production capacity. Mr. Yu said that COMMIT is about to release its TD-SCDMA single mode and TD-SCDMA/GSM dual mode solutions at the end of 2005. More TD solutions will be developed later to satisfy the changing market demand. Finally, Mr. Yu expected that TD-SCDMA Forum could further
bring its own advantages as an international organization into full
play and strive to better bridge the government, operators and TD
enterprises. He stated that the TD-SCDMA Forum is an important force
in the TD-SCDMA internationalization. The focus of TD-SCDMA Forum
should be on its international cooperations and international promotion. |
