Besides Datang and Siemens, Nortelnetworks is the only vendor which integrate TD-SCDMA solution into its 3G solutions in public, and the joint lab found by Datang and Nortelnetworks is the sign of development of TD-SCDMA camp. Thus, it is not surprising that Nortelnetworks will provide TD-SCDMA field trial test equipment together with Datang and Putian in the near future.

TD-SCDMA forum interviewed Mr. Huang Jigong, the Vice president of Nortelnetworks(China). Mr. Huang expatiated the whole strategy on TD-SCDMA of Nortel. As one of the first vendors support the development of TD-SCDMA and the founder of TD-SCDMA forum，Nortel has been researching the development of TD-SCDMA all along and completely confident to it had full confidance on it From the technological aspect, we think believe TD-SCDMA is a mature technology and
commercial products could be launched. We have joined the research of TD-SCDMA in ITU, we reached a conclusion TD-SCDMA is a commercial technology from network planning and the radio basic principle perspective.

From the market aspect, Nortel will implement its tactics step by step: from the core network to enter the TD-SCDMA area, which is consistent to our original product tactics that we support all access modes by unified core network. Therefore, the first step of Nortel is to support TD-SCDMA by using Nortel ‘s core network. Subsequently, Nortel and Datang founded joint lab, these are the reasons why Nortel can easily join the TD-SCDMA field trial test in early time.

The second step of our strategy is to focus on RNC. Nortel has been working on the analysis of the differences between WCDMA RNC standard and TD-SCDMA RNC standard, exploring the possibility to support TD-SCDMA based on WCDMA RNC, analyzing the probability of using dual mode NRC to support the two standard. Through the analysis, we confirmed the feasibility and believed that the scheme could be completed based on our platform. Mr. Huang revealed that Nortel had already set up a time schedule for the development and research of TD-SCDMA, simultaneously, Nortel welcome any corporation partners.

The third step of our strategy is to consider whether Nortel should move forward to the research and development of Node B in accordance with the time schedule of the market. According to Mr. Huang, Nortel had accelerated its efforts on research and development on TD-SCDMA in comparison with last year. Furthermore, Nortel established a product development department specializing in the work of product management so as to enhance the strength of research and development on TD-SCDMA. Certain staffs also have been allocated for the work of product management concerning TD-SCDMA issues.

Regarding TD-SCDMA trial networks, as Mr. Huang continues, it benefits from the primary cooperation with Datang mobile. He mentioned the necessity to adjust the original core networks providing we want to make our CN support TD-SCDMA. As such, both corporate partners (Datang and Nortel) will have certain adjustment and adaptation. Nortel and Datang had finished IOT test in the joint lab test, during which, IOT and voice quality were quite satisfied.

Concerning the market, Mr Huang believed that TD-SCDMA market is not only cinfined in China, but has more opportunities in Asian market. TD-SCDMA will be very competitive if the mobile communications are less developed in some countries and regions. As such, TD-SCDMA will be able to replace other standards if market entrance is in time.

Mr. Huang said, market development testifies that the market strategy of Nortel is correct, Nortel will even has more input on TD-SCDMA. He disclosed, Nortel will take further actions in a month later. Eventually, Mr. Huang pointed out, TD-SCDMA is the international 3G standard proposed by China and it is feasible from the perspective of standard and technology. Market will exist if commercial products available. The aim of Nortel is to become a leader of TD-SCDMA.
