When TD-SCDMA commercial procedure is going ahead faster and faster, more and more attention is paid to the OS used on 3G mobile phones. As a strong R&D company, ShangHai Koretide has been working hard on the developing and promotion of national mobile OS. Now Koretide is focusing on embedded OS for 3G phones and developing platform for smart phone. Regarding this topic TD-SCDMA Forum visited Mr. Chen Rong, CEO of ShangHai Koretide.
At the start, Mr. Chen Rong vividly introduced the main functions of future 3G phones: two persons can exchange information freely via telephone network although they are in different places. Now people can easily enjoy ¡°pick up the phone, hear dialing tone, dial the number, start the call¡±. By contraries, it is not so easily for persons at different locations to exchange information via notebook and Internet. After powering on the computer, connecting network cable, logging on Internet, we can¡¯t yet read our e-mail at once, neither share files with others. So the level of current Internet is comparable with the telephone in 30s, 40s of 19th Century. At that time, telephone had no dialing tone. All the calla were transferred by operators. Just like above description, current two computers can¡¯t automatically communicate with each other. The target of future Internet is to help unknown people to exchange data freely, just like current telephone network.

Future 3G phones will be a genuine micro-type computer. If traditional OS is used, it is very difficult for two 3G phone to exchange data with automatic connection. This situation can be described as operator can¡¯t shout out the dialing tone with his mouth. Koretide¡¯s ¡°Elastos¡± unbelievably realizes the ¡°dialing tone¡± on data network.

Unlike traditional OS, ¡°Elastos¡± is a network OS focusing on embedded equipment on Internet. Beause component and middle ware technology are adopted it can efficiently supports WEB applications. Koretide¡¯s own CAR component technology is the kernel of ¡°Elastos¡±. ¡°Elastos¡± has following advantages: it can achieve ¡°zero maintenance¡± for subscribers¡± when used by consumer marketing, i.e. so-called ¡°idiot¡± software platform; all the software, games and news can be executed by one click in graphic browser, i.e. so-called ¡°instant startup¡±; subscriber need not install any drivers. Software from different vendors can get seamless link by object code, i.e. so-called ¡°plug and play¡±. ¡°Elastos¡± has revolutionary benefit for 3C convergence.

Currently, based on ¡°Elastos¡± Koretide is developing 3G embedded OS -- ElaMe that is fully comply with TD-SCDMA, WCDMA and CDMA2000 standards. As a commercial total software solution for smart phone, ElaMe also adopts component and middle ware technologies. It inherits most of features from ¡°Elastos¡±: flexible kernel, CAR technology, application program model, application developing platform, and browser. ElaMe well embodies a concept of WEB service, which is in line with the architecture of future network --service oriented application. So far, ElaMe1.0 is successfully finished and it is used for 2.5G smart mobile phone. ElaMe2.0 (used for 3G) now is in ? version and will be released at the end of this year. It can realize program ¡°click execution¡± and have compatibility with TD-SCDMA or other 3G standards. Koretide together with TsingHua University, TongJi University setup a R&D center to buildup an integrated promotion architecture of manufacture, learning and research. This can help ¡°Elastos¡± software standard to get admit and support from neutral organization such as universities. At the same time, Key technologies are remarkably improved.

When talked about the original intention of ElaMe and application platform for smart phone, Mr. Chen Rong said, there are some different phases in software developing process: uncontrolled program, structured, object oriented, component based, SOA etc. Ten years ago browser brought a revolution of civil ¡°information sharing¡±. But it is just a half, not to the core. With this browser we can only enjoy reading news and can¡¯t play games because the software has to be installed on local hard disk before its execution. In future the executive mechanism of traditional OS ¨C ¡°pre-startup service/ daemon¡± will be washed out. Network computer can configure according to need, calculate according to need, start application first then service. These features can thoroughly change the mobility and security of calculating platform and become a novel program model. China should catch this very rare chance and work hard to get innovative technical breakthrough in this field.

It is well known that Qualcomm is the king for CDMA technology. This company holds most of CDMA IPRs. Meanwhile he also has BREW ¨C future oriented developing platform for smart phone. There is drastic competition in current 3G markets. Koretide wants to provide China own 3G mobile OS to support national 3G industries. Now China has own TD-SCDMA technology and standard. Koretide wants to work together with other domestic companies to provide local zero-distance support. Koretide¡¯s solution will offer a total software frame with easy integration, error detection, and trustful security architecture admitted by state. In future 3G markets, if Elastos is adopted, together with our own TD-SCDMA key technologies, we can create a new 3G era that is characteristic of advanced, high efficient, WEB oriented total 3G smart phone solution of our own. From this China can get more casting votes in 3G fields, more strong marketing adaptability in mobile industry development.

When talked about Koretide¡¯s future, Mr. Cheng Rong introduced following prospects.
From industrialization point of view, ¡°Elastos¡± has following targets: (1) Based on previous achievements, to finish developing new embedded OS for 3G smart phone. This OS should be able to compare beauty with other international mainstream OS such as Symbian, BREW, MS SmartPhone. (2) Meanwhile the trend of mobile application is data services. Koretide will hammer at application developing platform (WEB oriented) for smart phone that can substitute foreign Symbian, Java, BREW, .NET etc. This can smash the iceberg that application developing platform market is fully governed by foreign suppliers. (3) Koretide will also provide total 3G terminal software solution, which can support all TD-SCDMA, WCDMA and CDMA2000 standards. The solution can setup an integral frame to meet the requirement for technical update. Also ISP, ICP and carriers can gain some new ideas and realization methods via this developing platform. (4) Koretide¡¯s another goal is to realize multiple platform compatibility and dynamic update for the applications developed based on ¡°Elastos¡° component program model. Koretide¡¯s concept of software factory can help national mobile phone industry chain to go ahead along right way.

From product point of view, ¡°Elastos¡± has following targets: (1) To finish R&D on new embedded OS used for 3G smart phones which is characteristic of low power consumption. This OS can provide domestic 3G smart phone suppliers with core software and execution platform. (2) To finish R&D on program model and application developing platform based on Koretide¡¯s own technology ¨C CAR. (3) To buildup convenient IDE and other developing tools to support visual program. (4) To finish R&D on application simulator based ¡°Elastos¡± virtual machine technology to guarantee lower developing cost and shorter developing circle & time to market. (5) To realize trustful security authorization mechanism. (6) To provide new operation mode in network environment with the features of click execution, roll download, automatic update, and secure anti-virus. (7) To provide for carriers convenient operation application distribution system and billing system. (8) To support most of typical terminal application software and technologies. (9) To support all 3G standards: TD-SCDMA, WCDMA and CDMA2000.

At last, as a new senior member of TD-SCDMA Forum, Mr. Chen Rong expressed his respect to Forum¡¯s work: Via self¡¯s hard work Forum strongly promotes TD-SCDMA technology, cooperation with TD-SCDMA industry chain, TD-SCDMA industrialization and internationalization. Also Mr. Chen hope in future Forum can provide better communication platform, create more chances for the dialogue between government and lower end of industry chain, and buildup better investment and financing environment.
