Abstract of the opening remarks
at the "TD-SCDMA Evolution and LTE Summit Shanghai 2008¡±
Zhu Gaofeng: In the field of TD-SCDMA,
the government, enterprises and the intermediary organizations have
worked together on the formulation of the standard, mastering core
of the technologies, development of the products, series of tests
and trials ,and the formation of services and value chain. However,
it is not the end of the road, we still have to continue.
Wu Hequan: China¡¯s
3G and TD-SCDMA are attracting worldwide attention. As the TD-SCDMA
industry chain becomes more mature and the pre-commercial trial
continues, we are seeing more and more manufacturers step in TD-SCDMA,
and the supply chain is improving. The TD-SCDMA advantages on
technology, marketing, and operations are being widely recognized
and accepted. International cooperations are increasing. Investment
of multinational corporations on TD-SCDMA is also gradually increasing
because the TD-SCDMA market prospective is better clarified.
Feng Jichun:
I hoped that we better understand market demand and users needs
for TD-SCDMA. We must further enhance the function and performance
of the TD-SCDMA network, firmly develop the evolution products
for TD-SCDMA. We must form a mutual support between the TD-SCDMA
market and the product supply chain.
Qi Chengyuan:
We must proactively summarize the problems on terminal quality
and service model that have emerged from the pre-commercial test.
We should take the the Beijing Olympic Games as an opportunity
to accelerate the commercialization of TD-SCDMA .
Zhang Xinsheng: We urge the
joint effort of the operators, equipment vendors, terminal manufacturers
and chip makers to form a complete industrial chain, and to promote
together the further development of 3G technologies including
TD-SCDMA. The cooperation will leverage the core competency of
China¡¯s telecom industry, so the TD-SCDMA can have a grand future
in China. |

Verizon Wireless in talks to buy Alltel
telecomasia.net
(Associate Press via NewsEdge) Verizon Wireless is in talks to buy
Alltel Communications, the country¡¯s fifth-largest wireless carrier
by subscribers, for $27 billion, according to news reports.
If consummated, an acquisition would be the biggest telecom deal
since AT&T bought BellSouth at the end of 2006. Adding Alltel's
13.2 million subscribers to Verizon Wireless' 67.2 million would
create the largest wireless carrier in the country, far ahead of
AT&T with 71.4 million customers.
A deal could save Verizon Wireless more than $1 billion per year,
according to analyst Christopher King at Stifel Nicolaus. Verizon
Wireless now pays hundreds of millions in roaming charges every
year to Alltel, he estimated. |
