TD-SCDMA¡úHSPA¡úLTE is the right evolution path
Li Jinliang
Professor level senior engineer of the Seventh Research Institute, CETC

People have gradually realized that any established world's largest operating project requires an evolution rather than a revolution. It is possible that individual technology and its affected areas utilized in such project may require revolutions, but the overall project can only be evolutionary. China¡¯s telecommunication system is such an example. China needs to take 3G commercial deployment as a starting point, supplemented with state-backed research and standardization effort for new generation of broadband wireless communication technologies, in order to be an active contributor to the international 4G standards. It is not a feasible strategy to skip 3G to directly deploy LTE, or even 4G.

The 3G grows from the 2G by continuing services such as voice and messaging. In addition, there are many aspects of the services to be strengthened in 3G, such as the access speed to the Internet. There are also new value-added services that can only offered by the 3G network such as video telephony, and mobile TV. Therefore, the 3G network must take a full use of the 2G network infrastructure, and improve on top of it. It is neither necessary nor likely to give up the entire 2G network, i.e. building 3G from scratch.

The 3G technology must inherit and carry forward the 2G network, especially the 3G industrial chains, such as the chips, key components, terminals, system , instruments, etc., should use the 2G industrial chains as the basis of development and growth. The existent groundwork of the mobile communications and industrial chain is a must for developing 3G.

China Telecom C network upgrade to 3G network 4G to LTE
Sina.com
June 2nd, Wang Xiaochu, Chairman and the CEO of China Telecom, said at a press conference regarding the acquisition of the CDMA business that the CDMA network evolution in urban cities to will first be upgraded to EV-DO Rev.A, and wait for the LTE development. This is the first time a China Telecom senior executive declared in public the evolution direction of the world¡¯s third largest CDMA operator: its CDMA network will go to EV-DO before LTE. This announcement may indicate another major restructuring of the global CDMA industry chain after the Verizon, Sprint and Alltel's discontinuation to evolve their CDMA networks to next generation.

China Mobile recruits additional 60,000 customs for TD-SCMA commercial test
The Beijing news
From June 5th to July 31st, China Mobile will sign up additional 60,000 TD-SCDMA customers through its official website (http://tdtest.chinamobile.com). China Mobile will randomly select customers to participate in its pre-commercial test. Compared to an earlier designated selection of test customers, this round will have wider user participation.

Abstract of the opening remarks at the "TD-SCDMA Evolution and LTE Summit Shanghai 2008¡±

Zhu Gaofeng:
In the field of TD-SCDMA, the government, enterprises and the intermediary organizations have worked together on the formulation of the standard, mastering core of the technologies, development of the products, series of tests and trials ,and the formation of services and value chain. However, it is not the end of the road, we still have to continue.

Wu Hequan: China¡¯s 3G and TD-SCDMA are attracting worldwide attention. As the TD-SCDMA industry chain becomes more mature and the pre-commercial trial continues, we are seeing more and more manufacturers step in TD-SCDMA, and the supply chain is improving. The TD-SCDMA advantages on technology, marketing, and operations are being widely recognized and accepted. International cooperations are increasing. Investment of multinational corporations on TD-SCDMA is also gradually increasing because the TD-SCDMA market prospective is better clarified.

Feng Jichun: I hoped that we better understand market demand and users needs for TD-SCDMA. We must further enhance the function and performance of the TD-SCDMA network, firmly develop the evolution products for TD-SCDMA. We must form a mutual support between the TD-SCDMA market and the product supply chain.

Qi Chengyuan: We must proactively summarize the problems on terminal quality and service model that have emerged from the pre-commercial test. We should take the the Beijing Olympic Games as an opportunity to accelerate the commercialization of TD-SCDMA .

Zhang Xinsheng: We urge the joint effort of the operators, equipment vendors, terminal manufacturers and chip makers to form a complete industrial chain, and to promote together the further development of 3G technologies including TD-SCDMA. The cooperation will leverage the core competency of China¡¯s telecom industry, so the TD-SCDMA can have a grand future in China.

Verizon Wireless in talks to buy Alltel
telecomasia.net
(Associate Press via NewsEdge) Verizon Wireless is in talks to buy Alltel Communications, the country¡¯s fifth-largest wireless carrier by subscribers, for $27 billion, according to news reports.
If consummated, an acquisition would be the biggest telecom deal since AT&T bought BellSouth at the end of 2006. Adding Alltel's 13.2 million subscribers to Verizon Wireless' 67.2 million would create the largest wireless carrier in the country, far ahead of AT&T with 71.4 million customers.
A deal could save Verizon Wireless more than $1 billion per year, according to analyst Christopher King at Stifel Nicolaus. Verizon Wireless now pays hundreds of millions in roaming charges every year to Alltel, he estimated.
