¡°Father of TD¡±: Waiting for TD starting gun
Dr. Jing Wang, Acting Secretary-General of TD-SCDMA Forum, interviewed Professor Li Shihe, who is commonly known as the Father of TD-SCDMA, on April. 23rd, 2008. Increased TD-SCDMA terminal supply will accelerate the commercial deployment

Although the bankruptcy of a TD chipset vendor COMMIT is considered a TD industry suffering, some people regard this unavoidable phenomenon on the course of any industry.

TD now has relatively complete industrial chain. TD terminal sales of domestic brands have already reached more than 60 percent. It is learnt that certified TD-SCDMA terminal have exceeded more than 25 models. In addition to the newly added Motorola, other handset makers are mostly domestic brands. Recently CTTL has also completed network entrance certification for panda TD988, Motorola L800t, Huawei S660, Samsung SGH-i688, Longcheer-TD290, Haier HT-T300, UT Starcom, UT D607. Together with the previously certified 18 TD terminals, total number of certified terminals has reached 25 (mobile phones or data cards). TD-SCDMA/GSM dual-mode TG1000 handsets by Datang Telecom R&D have also obtained the network license recently. The increased number of TD-SCDMA terminal models available to the market indicates that TD development process is expedited. More importantly, the test results of the first round of terminals in the commercial trial will pave the way for better quality of TD products. Companies like Dopod, Lenov and Yulong Kupai all have indicated that upcoming terminal will be improved in appearance, battery, and features. If new TD terminals products can resolve the issues seen in the first round test, TD mobile phone users will reach more than 2 million, as predicted by some experts.

China Mobile intensifies the effort to promote TD-SCDMA Results of the commercial trial will determine next step strategy

On April 23rd, Mr. Wang Jianzhou, Chairman of China Mobile, made the speech ¡°Mobile technology value chain¡± in Guang Hua Management School, Peking University. He said that, as 3G approaches, the handset has changed from a communication mean to a concept of network convergence. For the first time, Mr Wang Jianzhou declared explicitly that China Mobile is determined to enter the internet business, and to create anew industry based on the internet.

DT Mobile Received TD-SCDMA Terminal Certification

Recently, DT Mobile received the certification for the market entrance of its TD-SCDMA/GSM dual mode handset TG1000, which symbolized that Datang Mobil officially entered the TD-SCDMA terminal manufacturing.

Huawei Ranked No. 4 in International Patent Applications

According to the Law Department of Huawei technology Ltd., Huawei has been the most active company to file patents in China in recent years. In 2007, more than 5,500 patents were applied in domestic. Accumulatively, total 26,800 patents were filed both in domestic and overseas, among which 4256 patents were approved in China with 90% being invention patents. Huawei filed PCT3268 patents in 2007. According to WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization), Huawei ranked No. 4 in PCT international patent applications. In WCDMA standard Huawei is No. 5 for its 133 basic patents declared in WCDMA.

Motorola: Roll Out TD-SCDMA Products in June

It is reported that Motorola will release 7 high-end products in next three months, in which 3 are PDA products directed for Chinese market demand. Its TD product will be available in market by the end of June. Motorola believes that the Chinese market is and the largest country market without doubt where users are used to owe multiple handsets and to chase new fashion handsets. The upside potential of this market is still huge. For instance, 3G influence has not manifested to Chinese market. Motorola can not afford to fail in the Chinese market, because it is the key to Motorola¡¯s success in the global market

UT- Starcom increased the first quarter expectation

May 7 news, UT-Starcom (Nasdaq: UTSI) today re-issued as of March 31 of 2008 its first quarter financial expectations, exceeding the previously announced expectations. Revenue will increase mainly because of the strong performance in company¡¯s personal communications department and other core business sectors. UT-Starcom said that the cash flow is strong due to the investment income of 49M USD from selling the Gemdale Corporation and 9M USD tax benefit in China.

Wang Jianzhou: Reorganization will definitely happen, and the results of the commercial trial will decide the next step for TD.
China is of core intellectual property rights in TD-SCDMA. We have built the network in 8 cities, i.e. Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Shenyang,Qin huangdao,Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Xiamen. Network optimization is on going. In a short span of time over 300 days we had installed as many base stations as we did for GSM in the same areas for the past 10 years. The commercial trial started on April 1st, and we have to wait for the commercial test results before deciding the next step.

Fu Liang: Mobile TV standards must converge
In the Mobile TV supply chain, radio, television and telecommunications are integral parts. Cooperation is the only way to achieve win-win. Without the support of mobile carriers and relative government ministries, mobile TV can only be called MP3 TV or MP4 TV. It would be impossible to achieve video-on-demand paid services. Meantime, without approval of radio and television ministries, telecom carriers cannot do much either.
NDRC: Telecom restructuring should accelerate
At the 2008 National Conference on Economic Reform held in Wuhan on May 5th, the National Development and Reform Commission officer indicated to speed up the restructuring of telecom carriers and enterprises. However, it was not been mentioned when the restructuring should occur.

Telecoms companies Vodafone and Telecom Italia will both sell Apple's iPhone in Italy, in an apparent break from previous exclusive carrier deals, a Reuters report said.
So far, Apple has struck exclusive deals with carriers to sell the phone, such as with AT&T in the US, Telefonica's O2 in Britain and Deutsche Telekom in Germany, the report said.
