handset bid results
July 31 - China Mobile announced the bidding results for the 40,000
TD-SCDMA mobile digital TV terminals. Four manufacturers are New
Postcom, ZTE, Coolpad and Lenovo, where New Postcom received more
than 50%, apparently the biggest winner. The only high-end model
is manufactured by Coolpad.

Hisense to build the largest TD-SCDMA mobile
phones production line in China Hisense,
one of the TD-SCDMA mobile phones suppliers, announced that it has
completed the establishment of TD-SCDMA/GSM dual-mode phone production
line with an annual capacity of 500,000 sets. This should be the
largest production line for TD-SCDMA mobile phones, and also means
that TD-SCDMA suppliers are expanding the TD-SCDMA producing capacity. |
Dell, Microsoft, Datang joint hand on TD-SCDMA
data cards
Datang has announced a partnership with Microsoft (MSFT) and Dell
(DELL), in Beijing to promote their cooperations in various aspects
from TD-SCDMA terminal solutions to application software.
According to a memorandum, Datang will start deep cooperation
with Microsoft in a series of key applications, including embedding
of the TD-SCDMA 3G data card driver in the next generation of
Windows operating system; the cooperation between Windows Mobile
and TD-SCDMA in terminal solutions and application software; and
the cooperation in other TD-SCDMA 3G value-added services and
applications.

ZTE's has invested over 2.5 billion RMB on TD-SCDMA and supplied
4,200 base stations in Beijing. Meantime, the time synchronization
system in TD-SCDMA supports China¡¯s North Star Satellite System,
which means that TD-SCDMA has cast off the U.S. GPS global satellite
positioning system.

Makers to support China's CMMB mobile TV
standard on Intel MID/UMPC platform

Intel will support the development of China's mobile TV standard
CMMB (China mobile multimedia broadcasting) by supporting MID
(mobile Internet device) and UMPC (ultra mobile PC) platform products
supporting CMMB technology, according to sources in the Taiwan
handset industry.
In line with Intel's move, a number of IT makers, including Asustek
Computer, Lenovo, Haier, Samsung Electronics and Fujitsu, are
reportedly planning to launch CMMB-compatible MID or UMPC products,
the sources indicated.
The development of CMMB MID and UMPC products follows the steps
that have taken by Dopod, Samsung and Motorola in the development
of CMMB-compatible handsets, pointed out the sources.

Motorola plans to restructure home, networks
unit

Motorola will restructure its home and networks mobility unit into
three separate businesses, which could ease the way for their potential
sale, according to media reports.
Analysts have said the company's handset business continued to lose
ground in second quarter as market share tumbled and the average
selling prices for its products declined.
That has signaled to Wall Street that Motorola's competitive stance
is weakening against rivals like Nokia and Samsung Electronics,
the world's No. 1 and No. 2 cell phone handset makers. |
India adds 8.94 mln mobile users in June-regulator

July 25 (Reuters) - Indian mobile firms added 8.94 million users
in June, maintaining the momentum in the world's fastest-growing
mobile services market, the telecoms regulator said on Friday.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) said there were
286.86 million wireless users in India at the end of June, up 55
percent from a year earlier.
No. 2 Reliance Communications (RLCM.BO: Quote, Profile, Research,
Stock Buzz) added 1.74 million wireless users to have 50.79 million
subscribers.
Unlisted Vodafone Essar, controlled by Britain's Vodafone Plc (VOD.L:
Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz), added 1.73 million mobile
customers in June, taking its total to 49.2 million. |
