China Telecom to launch 2nd round of TD-SCDMA
coverage in 28 cities after Olympic Games China
Mobile has reportedly issued the second-stage construction plan
for TD-SCDMA network to the Ministry of Industry and Information
Technology. In accordance with procedures, the plan must be approved
by the National Development and Reform Commission and the Ministry
of Industry and Information Technology. The coverage will be expanded
to 28 major cities. The first stage of TD-SCDMA network covers 10
cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Shenyang and Guangzhou.
According to China Mobile, the provincial branches of China Mobile
will be leading the 2nd stage network building. Relevant equipment
manufacturers have been demanded to have the equipment ready in
volume before January 2009. |
| China Mobile to subsidize TD-SCDMA handsets
during Olympic
China Mobile has decided to provide six measures including subsidization
of TD-SCDMA handsets during the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. It
is reported that China Mobile will subsidize 1000~1500RMB per
handset for users purchasing TD-SCDMA services during the Beijing
Olympics. Total subsidization can amount to 100M RMB.

Personal Handy Phone System to withdraw from
the market for TD-SCDMA Zeng Jianqiu,
Professor of Beijing University of Post and Telecommunications (BUPT)
recently proposed that PHS (Little Smart) network in Beijing, Shanghai
Qin Huangdao, Tian Jin, Qingdao and other 10 cities be terminated
to spare out the spectrum for TD-SCDMA. Zhou Jianming, General Manager
from Technical Department of China Mobile, said the TD-SCDMA frequency
resources are under constraint and called on MIIT for the assignment
of 1800-1920 MHz frequency by 2009. The China Mobile proposal is
under consideration by MIIT. |
CMMB Mobile Television Function mandatory
for 3rd round TD-SCDMA handsets
China Mobile is demanding CMMB mobile television capability in
its 3rd round of handset procurement. In early July, MIIT has
put CMMB function a mandatory requirement for TD-SCDMA phones
serving the Olympic Game, and the function test has caused a delay
of the procurement bid. It is said that the CMMB-enabled terminals
will not be sold through sales channels, rather they will be provided
to the Olympics volunteers and staff for free trial, and the service
will also be free till end of 2008. |

By the 1st July, China Mobile has enrolled more than 50,000
TD-SCDMA users including more than 8000 commercial trial users.
A user survey indicated that the common complains are mostly about
the high tariff and incomplete network coverage.

The TD-SCDMA access network construction was completed by end
of 2007, and the core network construction was done in the third
quarter 2007. Now 14688 base stations have been installed, and
the network optimized for 5 times. Additional base stations will
be placed before and after the Olympic Games, reaching total of
18,000 base stations by the end of this year.

China Mobile will work with companies in the industrial chain,
supported and coordinated by the government, to grow the TD-SCDMA
bigger and stronger. Meantime, China Mobile will put more effort
to promote the TD-LET research and development.

ZTE ties-up with Chinese operators to provide
3G network support for Olympic Games

Nokia Siemens Wins $865 Million Chinese Contract

China Mobile Communications Corp., the parent of Hong Kong listed
China Mobile has entered into a frame agreement with Nokia Siemens
Networks for its network expansion project. Under the contract Nokia
Siemens Networks will design, build, maintain and optimize the radio
and core network for China Mobile, which will include the Flexi
base station, mobile soft switching and Operating Support System
solutions in key provinces and cities across China.
The contract is valued at EUR 550 million (US $867 million). |
Samsung Gives TD-SCDMA an Olympic Run-out

One of China's biggest trials during the Beijing Olympics will be
the use of its domestic 3G (third-generation) standard for over
18,000 Olympic staff members and journalists during the games. It's
also a big test for Samsung, supplier of the handsets that will
keep Olympic officials connected during the competition. |
China Mobile re-starts negotiation on iPhone

iPhone into the Chinese mainland, according to Shanghai Securities
News.
Apple had contacted Chinese carriers including China Mobile on releasing
2G
China Mobile has not nailed down the schedule of iPhone's entrance
nor which version will be introduced in, said a spokesman of the
company. |
