LG Electronics’ Effort to TD-SCDMA Handset Development

LGE setup its China R&D center in late 2002. LGE has always been active in TD-SCDMA standardization, such as TD-SCDMA Forum and CCSA.

1.TSM (TD-SCDMA Systems for Mobile Telecommunication)

LG Electronics launched the C8008 project in late 2002. LGE made demo system for TSM voice call based on complete H/W physical layer and S/W modem. This project was based on its market-proven-successful commercial GSM phone G8000 with typical 3G handset features. The whole project was divided into two stages: EVB named NuWave 2.0, featured phone named C8008. For developing TSM demo system, JD algorithm and TSM protocol stack S/W were realized by LGE China R&D Center (Beijing). The following diagram is the development platform of C8008 project:

The whole project was finished near the end of 2003 with a result of successful voice call demonstration in lab. After the demonstration system, LGE transfers its accumulated knowledge into LCR from 2004.

2.LCR (Low Chip Rate)

Compared with TSM, LCR is a real 3G standard. Compare with UTRA TDD, LCR is a low chip rate solution and has the benefits of supporting smart antenna, DCA, baton handover, etc. LGE is one of main share holders of COMMIT, a Shanghai based TD-SCDMA LCR modem chipset company. For the complete commercial TD-SCDMA mobile phone, LGE is developing multimedia MMI in Beijing. LGE’s first commercial LCR handset will be appeared till the end of 2005.

LGE also support MTNet test with 3G services. LGE already showed its preeminent 3G mobile technology in Europe, North America and Korea. LGE launched CDMA 1X and WCDMA handset successfully in the market and had good reputation from customers. LGE’s LCR handset will be made based on this preeminent handset technology.
