Seminar On TD-SCDMA Terminal and Chipset Held in Hangzhou

By Leslie Cheung, TD-SCDMA Forum

On July 7th and 8th, 2006, a seminar on TD-SCDMA terminal and chipset was hosted by the TD-SCDMA Forum in Hangzhou. Leaders from Science and Technology Dept, MII, CATR, and telecom operators like China Telecom, NTT DoCoMo as well as investment and consulting organizations and research institutes attended this seminar. More than 100 representatives from more than 50 chipset and terminal makers as well as test instrument manufacturers also attended this seminar. Organizations attended this event include Datang Mobile, TD Tech, ADI, T3G, Commit, Maxim, TCL, ZTE, LG, Bird, Agilent, Starpoint, Anritsu, MCCI and etc. Topics discussed in this seminar covered different aspects of TD-SCDMA terminal and chipset, eg. Test and authentication of TD-SCDMA terminals, preparation for mass production of TD-SCDMA handsets, TD-SCDMA differentiated services, test instrument R&D, development and applications of TD-SCDMA HSDPA.

Mr. Yu Shengduo, Director of High Technology Development Division of Science and Technology Dept., MII said in his opening remarks that key technologies in TD-SCDMA like TD-SCDMA system equipment, smart antenna, baton handover and cofrequency network deployment have been fully verified in the field tests. Functions of TD-SCDMA terminal and chipset as well as its compatibility and stability have been greatly improved. Current, a variety of stable terminals are ready for commercial use. All these shows that progress has been made in TD-SCDMA industrialization and TD-SCDMA Forum has played an important role in this process. He encouraged more organizations to be involved in the Forum, the international platform, to enhance their communication and cooperation.

In the salon held later that day, topics like status of TD-SCDMA development, challenges of TD-SCDMA commercialization and strategies in TD-SCDMA commercialization were discussed. Prof. Wang Wenbo, Dean of the School of Telecommunication Engineering, BUPT, Mr. Liu Jitang, Deputy General manager of Datang Mobile (Shanghai), Dr. Qian Guoliang, Vice President of LG Electronics China R&D Center, Mr. Wu Guohua, Senior Vice President of Holley Comm were the guest speaker in the salon.

Mr. Liu Jitang, deputy general manager of the Datang Mobile (Shanghai) said it is crucial to construct a platform to generate TD-SCDMA service environment. It is unrealistic to assume any TD-SCDMA service in advance. After the basic completion of this platform, service providers will have more possibility to develop their services and applications based on their own technology, customer base and customer demands.

¡°It is meaningless to seek the killer applications,¡± said Jing Wang, secretary general of TD-SCDMA forum. Developing 3G in China to a large extend represents the technology innovation in China. And actually it provides more space for operators and service provides to develop new services and applications. The development of 3G will generate great social and economic benefits. He went on to explain.

Most of the attendees said TD-SCDMA should be put into commercial operation as soon as possible. And the market operation is the best way to verify and improve this technology. Any technology can not be made fully mature without putting it into the marketplace, said Zhao Yan, Vice President of Koretide, a Shanghai based TD-SCDMA terminal software provider. He went on to explain only when we put it into the market, can it be more quickly finetuned and investment will also flow in.

Others argued that TD-SCDMA industrialization actually began in year 2003. Its learning curve is relatively short compared with other technologies. They suggest the government to stipulate relevant regulations to protect this homegrown standard.

Dr. Jing Wang, secretary general of TD-SCDMA Forum said, if considered seriously and strictly, the TD-SCDMA industry chain is still not so complete. We still need input from the first class multinational enterprises. And these enterprises and investment organizations will only enter this market when this technology shows clear prospects. Many of TD-SCDMA Forum organizations are big name multinational companies in the world. And the Forum has played an important role in the TD-SCDMA industrialization, commercialization, internationalization and futurization. The Forum has created different kind of communication opportunities for its members as well as other organization in this industry chain to exchange viewpoints and ideas and this is extremely important at this stage. The involvement of overseas telecom operator and other foreign organizations further enhanced the tie between the TD-SCDMA enterprises in the Chinese domestic market and overseas telecom market. We hope to see more suggestion in this area to help develop TD-SCDMA.
