Market Demand and Positioning Key to TD-SCDMA Success

-Seminar on TD-SCDMA Services and Network Planning Hosted Recently

By Leslie Cheung, TD-SCDMA Forum

The development of TD-SCDMA is greatly accelerated and the matureness of this technology has been accepted by the whole industry. The question we face today is how to make this industry bigger and stronger, and how to satisfy the requirements of telecom operators. As a result, the TD-SCDMA network planning, market demand as well as its operation strategy and positioning have become the focus of the industry.

A seminar on TD-SCDMA services and network planning is hosted on Apr. 13th, by the TD-SCDMA Forum. More than 90 representatives from TeleInfo Institute of CATR, Datang, TD Tech, Nortel, Lucent, Huawei, ZTE, Alcatel Shanghai Beill, UT Starcom, Qualcoom, Philips, Dilithium, Fiberhome, T3G, Comba, Koretide and MCCI attended this seminar. The seminar is chaired by Dr. Jing Wang, secretary general of TD-SCDMA Forum. Topics of this seminar included services and application of TD-SCDMA, business model, network planning and optimization, etc.

Ms. Xu Yu, Deputy director of Teleinfo Institute of CATR delivered her speech on Prospects of 3G Applications. She said, the TD-SCDMA technology itself is mature enough. And it is superior to other two 3G technologies in terms of data services. Currently, the key to TD-SCDMA success lies not in the technology and market demand, but in operator¡¯s strategy. The positioning of telecom operators will influence the TD-SCDMA services directly. The operation and business model of TD-SCDMA services will be a determinant to its success after its commercialization.

Presentation topics of TD Tech, Koretel, Alcatel Shanghai Bell, Lucent, Dilithium were about the Future TD-SCDMA applications and planning, e.g. TD-SCDMA services and applications, TD-SCDMA business model analysis, Splendid TD-SCDMA mobile applications, World wide web on the map and MapWeb, 3G video applications. Datang Mobile, ZTE and China Potevio discussed topics on network planning and optimization. The topics of their presentations are solutions and products of TD-SCDMA network operation and maintenance, TD-SCDMA network planning, and etc. TD Tech, Comba and Fiberhome, T3G also presented on TD-SCDMA indoor coverage, and solutions on TD-SCDMA terminal, chipset and system. In addition, the organizing committee invited Dr. Zhang Changgang, RF expert form Nortel to introduce WCDMA/HSDPA optimization.

Dr. Jing Wang, said, the Forum had organized serial TD-SCDMA seminars and trainings since last year. These activities were very fruitful and productive. The Forum had well bridged the government, research institutes and the Forum¡¯s member organization. Through these activities, problems were found and resolved in a very early stage. The Forum will go on to host different kind of seminars and trainings and strive to provide more communication opportunities for different sectors in this industry. And these will surely benefit the approaching TD-SCDMA industrialization and commercialization.
