“Technique Exchange Conference of TD-SCDMA Terminal Industrial Chain” hosted by TD-SCDMA forum was successfully held on Sept 23rd, 2004 in Marco Polo Hotel in Beijing. Over 30 delegates from TD-SCDMA terminal industrial chain related companies attended the conference, including Siemens, Shanghai Datang, UT Starcom, Samsung, Agilent, Fujitsu, T3G, Spreadtrum, Koretide, etc.

During the presentation time, delegates from Spreadtrum, T3G, Shanghai Datang and Koretide gave subject speeches on the R&D process of TD-SCDMA chip, handset and handset operation system, and answered questions raised by other companies.

3G director of Spreadtrum, Dr. Kang Yi introduced the background of Spreadtrum and demonstrated the 3G handset chipset developed by Spreadtrum. He thought that with the development of TD-SCDMA and the improvement of semiconductor technology, high-integration chip would degrade the cost and shorten the developing time, and finally brought profits for terminal manufacturers; entertainment would be the main function for 3G handsets; from all perspectives of TD-SCDMA industrial chain, RF is the most weak sector, which would influence the commercialization process of TD-SCDMA. In the conference, Dr. Kang appealed to TD-SCDMA forum to contact related RF companies to join TD-SCDMA camp to create a good communication platform for the healthy development of industrial chain. After talking about the terminal market, Dr. Kang and participating companies had a penetrating discussion about issues such as TD-SCDMA handset system, selling price, value adding point and service positioning.

Vice general manager of terminal division of Shanghai Datang Mobile Communication Equipment Co Ltd, Mr. Liu Jitang introduced the products and solutions developed by Shanghai Datang. He also gave a detailed explanation about the basic and advanced characteristics of the products and the cooperation strategy in software and hardware of the company in the future. The functional test of terminal products developed by Shanghai Datang would be finished by Oct 27th, and the test result at present was satisfying. PTAS protocol analysis software was expected to launch in March of 2005. Besides the development of TD-SCDMA handset chip, Shanghai Datang also made breakthroughs in terminal corollary equipments. It had developed an automatic test system based on general equipment. During the speech, Mr. Liu Jitang expressed clearly that Shanghai Datang would not set foot in the development of chip; it would focus on the integral core technology of TD-SCDMA. Shanghai Datang would continuously strengthen its business conformity capability to make TD-SCDMA products available for common people.

Mr. Cheng Jingbo, technical marketing manager of T3G, introduced the background and the progress of product development of the company. He expounded the core competitive power of T3G in product design and the target function and expended application of the first, second and third generation of its TD-SCDMA chip. He also demonstrated the strong advantages of T3G chip in the degradation of design risks for handset manufacturers by the agile transformation of single and double mode.

As a newly joined member of TD-SCDMA forum, Shanghai Koretide gave a speech in the subject presentation period. After a short introduction to the development course, Mr. Chen Rong, CEO of Koretide explicated the basic characteristics of its core software from the design of 3G handset operating system, calculating applications according to requirements, shared software factory to the complete vitrification of distributed system, and also its importance in 3G handsets industrial chain with IPR. The 3G handset operating system was expected to be finished in November. After the presentation, delegates asked Mr. Chen Rong questions about the compatibility of the operating system, how to realize the operation according to requirements, and future 3G network running mode, etc.

Secretary-general of TD-SCDMA forum, Mr. Ling Haifeng expressed his congratulations to Shanghai Koretide for its joining as a senior member, and awarded the membership certification to the company.
After the presentation period, TD-SCDMA forum held round-table meetings for delegates to discuss problems and obstacles in the industrialization of TD-SCDMA.

It was agreed by all participants that RF companies were in great lack in the current TD-SCDMA industrial chain. This situation had great influence to the industrialization and commercialization processes of TD-SCDMA. They wished TD-SCDMA forum and other guild to incite more RF companies to join TD camp by relevant approach, and promote the development of TD-SCDMA industry through the inter communication of the industrial chain.

Delegates thought that future 3G terminal prices would not only be influenced by the cost of many devices but also the service content.

During the round-table meeting, delegates paid most attention to the possibility of independent network composition of TD-SCDMA. Since this issue would have great influence on the further investment of finance and research by upstream and downstream companies of TD-SCDMA industrial chain, participating forum members appealed to the government to make its attitude more clearly about this issue in order to avoid great investment risks for terminal companies.

TD-SCDMA forum declared that it would hold subject conferences periodically according to the requirements from the government, telecom operators, research institutes and related corporations in the future. The conference would discuss urgent questions and feedback suggestions of upstream and downstream companies of the industrial chain to the government through relevant channel. And at the same time, the forum also wished related corporations to create TD-SCDMA products with high quality by making continuous efforts to strengthen the confidence of government and operators.

TD-SCDMA forum would continue extending its advantages of openness and fairness and through real practices increase the communication between terminal companies and operators, promote the strategic conjunction between terminal companies and international companies, unify strategic aim of TD-SCDMA, and accelerate the industrialization, commercialization and internationalization processes of TD-SCDMA.

Delegates also discussed about questions such as who should pay for 3G mobile phone, the lifecycle of 2G and 2.5G mobile phone after the commercialization of 3G during the round-table conference.

“Technique Exchange Conference of TD-SCDMA Terminal Industrial Chain” increased the mutual communication among TD-SCDMA terminal industrial chain and played an important role in promoting the industrialization process of TD-SCDMA.
