WuYi TD-SCDMA seminar

¡°WuYi TD-SCDMA seminar¡± hold by TD-SCDMA forum was convoked successfully in the WuYi mountain from May 20 to 23 in 2004.There were more than 50 guests attended this meeting, including supervisors of the government department from the MII and MOST, experts of scientific research organizations, forum director members, senior members and some representatives of the core enterprises in the TD-SCDMA industry chain. The guests discussed the latest progress in TD-SCDMA deeply and communicated extensively about how to resolve the problems in the future development of TD-SCDMA with one mind.

Mr.Xie feibo, the deputy director general of the wireless management department of MII, expatiated the development strategy of china with 3G: ¡°Persistence, Harmonization, Comprehensiveness¡±, according to the development actuality in the world. He hopes that we should understand correctly about 3G, rather than crow about it. He points out that there is no mature application with 3G in the world at present, the market of 3G is not driven by technique but by service, and in the final analysis the telecom industry belongs to the third industry, so it must know the customers clearly. Then, he praised the latest progress in the TD-SCDMA industry chain: from the technical aspect, asymmetry technology of TD-SCDMA can satisfy the requirement of both slow/fast data services efficiently at low cost; In the industrialization and commercialization aspect, the gap between TD-SCDMA and WCDMA or CDMA 2000 is reducing, we should exert the comparative advantage sufficiently to provide diverse services. At last, he hopes all relative corporations could have more communication with government department via forum, the open professional platform.

Professor Wang jing from C3G expert group introduced the latest development progress of the TD-SCDMA chain corporations. The industrial framework of TD-SCDMA has formed, and there are many corporations participate in it, the distributing of industry is going in reason. At present, the core network and system products of TD-SCDMA have become maturely, and the commercial terminal chips will be provided in the late of 2004 or in the early of 2005, then the commercial TD-SCDMA telephone would come out after 6~12 months. With the problems of industry chain, Professor Wang put forward some efficient advice: As for the policy, government should come out some policies as early as possible to promote the development of TD-SCDMA industry, to attract more corporations come into the TD-SCDMA industry, make the companies that have already came into the industry could plough into more energy safely; As for the capital, government should give more support to the corporations in the main part of the industry chain; As for market-oriented, the TD-SCDMA market should think of different demand of operators, we should take more efforts in developing the market both in domestic and in overseas to make the TD-SCDMA the real international standard.

The representatives from DATANG introduced the latest progress in TD-SCDMA terminal. In March 2004, the first chipset based on general DSP that integrate by DATANG has passed the test and get through the first whole-system call. In May 2004, the first base band process chip of TD-SCDMA developed by DATANG and Spreadtrum will finish the tapeout. DATANG plans that there will be two more different samples of terminal chip in the late of 2004; In June 2005, there will be at least three terminal chips could be launched. The representatives also promulgated the timetable of different editions of terminal physical software and upper protocol stack. Furthermore, DATANG has terminal test lab in Beijing, including CN, RNC and NodeB, it could provide an actual network test environment for the terminal corporations to process tests such as IOT, applications and services.

The representatives from Spreadtrum introduced the development of the first TD-SCDMA chip in the world. This base band chip, SC8800, is the first multi-mode chip of TD-SCDMA. It is the most integrated chip in the relative ones that integrates ABB, DBB and power management. This chip has tapeout in March this year, the hardware functions are working well till now, and the software integrative test is being done and will be finished in September this year. After that, Spreadtrum will plunge into the development of demo phone. They hope that the mobile phones with chips made by Spreadtrum could come into the market in the late of this year or in the early of next year.

The representatives from T3G introduced their latest progress in TD-SCDMA chips. T3G is designing LCR/GSM dual-mode chip and developing relative protocol stack software. And according to the customers¡¯ requirements, they could also produce single-mode chips(support R4 edition). T3G intends to launch chips in the third quarter this year, produce demo terminals correspond with SAMSUNG in the fourth quarter, launch the second edition of chips in the first quarter next year, implement mass production of chips in the second quarter next year, and in the third quarter next year they would implement mass production mobile phone according to the market. T3G will develop module products with collaborators, produce test products with test corporations and tool corporations, and even provide the whole solution from chips, the protocol stack software to test for terminal corporations and terminal research centers.

The joint venture corporation of Siemens & HuaWei introduced their progress since its establishment; the representatives from Nortel Networks made a lecture about their development stratagem in TD-SCDMA; the representatives from ZTE introduced their latest progress in NodeB; the representatives from Xi¡¯an Haitian introduced their breakthrough in smart antenna; the representatives from ST introduced their new progress in TD-SCDMA chip. Otherwise, from the position of operators£¬doctor XiaHao of Vodafone provided some reference advice about the future commercialize of TD-SCDMA and how to make efficient communication between vendors and operators.

All representatives agreed with the great support of relative government departments and more corporations¡¯ participation, the TD-SCDMA industry chain has shaped and will develop by cooperation. TD-SCDMA can deploy network independently and operate by independent operators with TDD licenses. Toward the uncertain factors of policy and market in the process of TD-SCDMA industrialize, representatives appeal that government should come out some policies to promote the development of TD-SCDMA industry, provide more capital to core companies in the industrial chain, attract more famous corporations who concern the development of TD-SCDMA to come into the TD-SCDMA camp. As for the market strategy, corporations should make more communication with operators to strengthen their confidence, and also consider different demand of operators, prepare the commercial TD-SCDMA deployment in the future.

With the advantages of openness and justice, the forum will organize this communication events periodically according to the demand of governments, operators, research departments, corporations and the development progress of TD-SCDMA to promote the communication and cooperation among different parts of the chain. This would provide a convenient communication bridge among corporation and government, promote the process of the industrialization, commercialization and internationalization of TD-SCDMA.
