2007 (International) Summit on Application in Wireless Communications hosted by China Center for Information Industry Development（CCID）in associate with TD-SCDMA Forum was held on Apr. 24-25 in Beijing.

Officials and experts attended the conference include Minister Xi Guohua from Ministry of Information Industry (MII), Zhu Gaofeng, academician of China Academy of Engineering (CAE), Liu Cai, vice director general of China Institute of Communications (CIC), Zhang Xinsheng vice director-general of MII science and technology dept., Liao Xiaohan, vice director-general of Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) high and new technology industrialization dept., Lu Yang, vice director-general of MII telecom administration bureau, Xie Feibo, MII radio administration bureau, etc. Presentations and discussions in the conference covered topics of wireless and 3G technology convergence and development, network deployment and optimization, cooperation within the industry chain and development of applications, network operation and marketing strategies, harmonious development of terminals and applications, etc. Xi Guohua, Vice Minister of MII said, mobility of voice service will increase, and mobile cannibalization is emerging.

During this seminar, a half-day TD-SCDMA panel discussion was held, which attracted a lot of interest. Representatives from TD Forum members such as China Mobile, Datang, ZTE, TD Tech, Potevio, Anritsu and other vendors in the TD industry attended. The panel discussion explored the 3G mobile communication and TD-SCDMA development trend as well as solutions in how to build the network reasonably and conduct better TD trails, etc.

Dr. Chen Haofei, secretary-general of TD Forum attended the conference and presented on the panel discussion. He said, customer demand is key in forming the 3G market and leading it into a healthy circle.

According to Chen’s analysis, China is in a comparatively favorable position in the global 3G market. So far China has not suffered weak technology, immature industry chain and the bad market conditions. It is not necessary for us to invest a lot to verify our strength. In contrast, what we need to do is to study the experiences of other counties in their 3G service development and our industry structure. Only by doing so can we got better TD-SCDMA technology and network.

Competition will help to improve efficiency and benefit consumers. However, blind and vicious competition will bring about more negative effects.

“Vicious competition will be a threat to 3G long-term development. In order to avoid such competition, TD Forum will focus on the communications between telecom operators and other players in the industry.” Chen Haofei said.

In year 2006, revenue from value-added services accounted for 21.6% in total mobile communication revenue. Chen Haofei said 3G application does not mean simply add functions of electronic devices to the handsets. “3G application is definitely not simply adding piles of functions to handsets. These kind of application are not integrated with the telecom service and has a lot of limitations. The real 3G application should be closely integrated with telecom services.” Chen went on to explain that 3G services can not be separated from 2G services. Neither is it totally different from 2G services.”

TD Forum invited industry experts from Datang, LG, Ericsson (China) R&D Center, CYIT etc to attend the Dialogue with the topic of Way to Chinese TD-SCDMA Industrialization. Dr. Chen Haofei chaired the Dialogue. Interviews and questions and answers were presented in this activity. Topics discussed include latest TD terminal development, TD industrialization and customized service, service platform, foreign organization involvement, 3G business model, IPR issues etc.

TD-SCDMA is right to be commercialized. TD Forum will co-organize or participate exchange activities in the industry and recommend suitable activities for its members so that they can have more opportunities to communicate and share information, opinions. We will do our best to offer member organizations preferential prices. TD Forum will leverage its resources, knowledge and know-how to enable different level platforms in an effort to promote TD-SCDMA commercialization, internationalization and futurization.
