A win-win for TD-SCDMA and WiMAX
¨D¨DSecretary-general Chen Haofei attended WiMAX World Asia2007

Dr. Chen Haofei, TD Forum Secretary-general attended the WiMAX World Asia2007 held yesterday as an co-organizer and delivered a speech.

In his speech, Chen said competition is definitely not a good attitude at starting point and downward compatibility is a must for WiMax. Just like carriers will not give up 2G when they begin to deploy 3G.

TD-SCDMA commercial trail network is currently being constructed by China Mobile, China Telecom and China Netcom in ten cities and will be put into operation in October. ¡°TD-SCDMA value chain will be ready in 6 months. But WiMAX will definitely not reach coverage in 6 months.¡±

When talked about the relationship between TD-SCDMA and WiMAX, Chen Haofei said, WiMAX or WiFi should nudge its way out as an adds-on function for TD terminals, so in the other way around, TD terminals will become more attractive to customers.

According to his analysis, WiMAX will go parallel with TD at the initial stage of its market expansion. For TD, WiMAX can be regarded as a new feature instead of a new network. The two will complement each other and TD will leverage with WiMAX features.

¡°In the medium term WiMAX/WiFi and TD-SCDMA should co-exist by being supplementary to each other. While in the long term WiMAX can gradually be competitive as TD becomes more mature, so to have a bright future in China.¡± said Chen Haofei.
