| Since took over the post of
Secretary-General of TD Forum in August 2010, Shi Guang
brought a new dynamic atmosphere for this technology forum.
In this "open" platform including a large number
of excellent domestic and international mobile communication
enterprises, the member enterprises discussed not only technology
topics but also tthe application, industry and other industry
concerned issues. With the increase cooperation between
international and domestic companies, this year the fieriest
issue TD-LTE has become the main content in TD Forum series
exchanges and cooperation activities.
According to Mr. Shi, about the TD-LTE industry chain cooperation,
in addition to promoting the technology maturity and network
evolution, how to improve the intelligent terminal directly
linked to the consumer experience and create new applications
are also fateful.
More Chip Manufacturers to
Join in TD-LTE Scale Trial Network
Communications World Weekly: Since the rapid development
of TD-LTE trial network this year, there have been many
news reports about 7 cities TD-LTE network construction
progress. TD-LTE terminal and chip R&D process are also
speed up. In your opinion, what links improvements need
to be accelerated in the industry chain?
Shi Guang: From its development to commercial process,
TD-SCDMA terminal has been regarded as the bottleneck, therefore,
in the beginning of TD-LTE industry development, both government
departments and the operator have given high priority and
great support for the R&D of terminal industry, including
chip and operating system. Now, 11 domestic and international
chip manufacturers join TD Forum and they have launched
TD-LTE chip development already. These chip manufacturers
including several international chip giants will certainly
promote TD-LTE terminal industry development process, but
will also bring greater pressure on China¡¯s local chip manufacturers
in the future market competition.
In the second half of this year, may be another 3 or 4
chip manufacturers will take part in the scale trial networks
Network¡¯s ¡°Practical Issue¡±
is the Key Content in TD Forum Series activities
Communications World Weekly: In the process of promoting
TD-LTE industry, TD Forum seems to be more active than ever
before, which has planned and organizd a number of meetings
and activities. Does industry chain carry out more in-depth
exchanges on how to promote TD-LTE development?
Shi Guang: TD Forum held TD-LTE Terminal Core Technology
Seminar in March this year. Guests from chip vendors, systems
equipment manufacturers, testing instruments manufacturers,
operating system manufacturers and operator shared and exchanged
their views on TD-LTE chip R&D development progress.
In this seminar, participants carried out the detailed discussion
on some technology difficulties and R&D problems as
well.
In June, TD Forum and CATR of MIIT jointly held TD Intelligent
Terminal Technology Development Seminar, which stressed
the word "Intelligent". First, because the times
that the domestic terminal manufacturers have gained a lot
of market share and create economic benefits by low-end
"feature phone" has passed. The gap between China¡¯s
domestic terminal manufacturers and foreign terminal manufacturers
in operating system, software applications and other aspects
is quite obvious. The second is that the maturity of 3G
and the huge increase of mobile Internet business lead the
strong needs of terminal and form a intelligent terminal-based
situation. Thus, the whole industry chain needs to realize
the importance of intelligent terminal of high bandwidth.
TD Forum plans to set up some special working groups to
do some discussion and research works on the practical issues
and technology issues in TD-LTE industry chain.
Communications World Weekly: TD Forum to hold TD-LTE Networking
Technology Seminar in late July. According to what you know,
at this moment what networking technology/solutions/products
will cause concern to the industry?
Shi Guang: The purpose of the meeting is to seek
a more complete solution for TD-LTE networking according
to a number of key technology issues occurred during the
current TD-LTE network construction process. Industry chain
will propose many policy and programs focus on the network
practical issues, including TD-LTE networking with the same
frequency and interference suppression, TD-LTE/3G/2G terminal
multi-mode multi-connection and business-coupled strategy,
TD-LTE network, performance, business and terminal conformance
testing, and build a new generation network under LTE technology.
Multi-mode is the Tough Target
New Business to be Developed
Communications World Weekly: It is known that the major
terminals used in the initial TD-LTE test are single-mode
TD-LTE data cards, and now the demand for multi-mode and
multi-frequency is very obvious. According to what you know,
whether the industry has made some suitable solutions to
the demand for the multi-mode, multi-band, PAD, and handset
terminals?
Shi Guang: the mobile communications and network
update need process which will lead to the long-term coexistence
of 2G/3G/4G in the future. Therefore, the demand for multi-mode
terminals is obvious. Now, more and more tough requirements
on terminals including Multi-mode, different frequencies
and different rates businesses switching will certainly
increase the R&D difficulty of chip manufacturers, but
the technology-advanced manufacturers have introduced the
chip to meet these requirements, and the other manufacturers¡¯
product introduction rate need to be accelerated.
In addition, TD-LTE test instrumentation R&D progress
developed relatively smoothly. The international mainstream
test instrumentation and test systems manufacturers have
joined the industry chain, especially for the terminal conformance
testing, wireless network performance testing, business
simulation and analysis, related companies are constantly
introducing new testing programs.
Communications World Weekly: In addition to network technology
and terminal issues, do you think there are some other key
issues that operators and industry chain need to attention?
Shi Guang: The development of TD-LTE including the
current 3G, an important issue is the new applications and
new business. New business and new applications are the
fundamental ways to attract consumers. Why consumers use
3G? Why they use TD-LTE? Because operators will bring consumers
a better experience and better facilities, not just the
increased network bandwidth.
New business and new applications will ensure the benefit
for all industry aspects and realize the sustainable development.
These are also dependent on the rapid development of smartphone,
which will bring a wealth of applications and a better experience
to consumers by the new technology.
