BEIJING (AFX) - China`s mobile telecommunication conditions are basically ready for the launch of third generation mobile technology (3G), and the Ministry of Information Industry (MII) will make a decision on 3G development this year, Xinhua news agency reported, citing a government official.
The report quoted an unnamed MII official as saying that conditions for China to develop 3G are basically ready as the country has developed a complete set of 3G products, including network, end-user products, chips and software.
Xinhua also said the homegrown 3G standard, TD-SCDMA is now ready for commercialized use.
China is currently choosing between three 3G standards -- European-backed WCDMA, Qualcomm-developed CDMA2000, and TD-SCDMA, widely seen as the least mature technology. The government has been waiting for TD-SCDMA to mature before issuing 3G licenses.
