BEIJING (AFX) - China will issue policy governing third generation mobile telecommunications (3G) at the "proper time" for the market, China¡®s Ministry of Information Industry (MII) said.
Speaking at the Global Fortune Forum in Beijing, the head of the MII, Wang Xudong, did not give a timeframe on when 3G licenses will be issued or which standard China will adopt, only saying that China will use the technology at a "proper time".
"In short, we believe that the 3G technology promotion, at the end of day, depends on the maturity of the technology and the development of the market (in China) for us to make a decision," Wang said.
But the minister said that China will use "new communications technologies" before 2008, when Beijing hosts the Olympic Games, although he did not clarify whether these technologies actually refer to 3G.
The Chinese government is currently conducting field tests on the three 3G standards - US-backed CDMA2000, EU-backed WCDMA and the country¡®s homegrown TD- SCDMA. The test results, according to earlier media reports, should have come out in April this year.
Analysts have forecast that the government will issue 3G licenses in the second half of this year.
