Invited by two major investment banks, Dr. Jing Wang, Secretary
General of TD-SCDMA Forum, introduced the current status and
future trend of TD-SCDMA to numerous financial institutions
in New York, San Francisco, and Hong Kong.

The TD-SCDMA conducted the similar road shows in US, Hong Kong,
and Singapore in April and December 2007, in which Dr. Wang
offered objective assessment on the status and progress achieved
by the TD-SCDMA supply chain, and clarified the concerns and
even misunderstanding that commonly existed among overseas investors.
The past one year, TD-SCDMA has been moving forward in China
as the TD-SCDMA Forum has predicted. The road shows contributed
to the financial performance of TD-SCDMA supply chain companies.
Since early 2007, TD-SCDMA Forum established routine information
exchanges with telecom analysts of major international investment
banks, which enables real time objective understandings of the
TD-SCDMA status and prospects in international financial market,
hence beneficial to the quick ramp up of the TD-SCDMA cause
in China.
Entering 2008, TD-SCDMA has been moving at accelerated rate,
thanks to the proactive steps taken the Chinese government and
China Mobile. TD-SCDMA once again became a hot focus since many
milestones have occurred, e.g. the 10-city pre-commercial trial
beginning April 1st, the telco restructuring announcement made
by three government ministries on May 24th, the TD-SCDMA services
launched for Beijing Olympics, and the upcoming phase 2 expansion
of TD-SCDMA networks. People constantly argue about those technical
or non-technical glitches that arise from the pre-commercial
trial. Domestically, TD-SCDMA Forum has managed to educate the
public to be tolerant with the non-fatal technical glitches,
which are normal and can be quickly resolved anyway. Meantime,
the Forum has been pushing for the availability of a state level
TD-SCDMA grand plan in China so that the TD-SCDMA suppliers
can have better business predictability. Internationally, in
additional to the Forum regular work with major media giants
like Reuters, Inter Fax, and Bloomberg to provide progressional
status of TD-SCDMA in China, TD-SCDMA Forum continues the ¡°TD-SCDMA
Overseas Road Shows¡± as it proves an effective and efficient
method to positively promote TD-SCDMA in front of international
investors.
The road shows are divided into two stops ¨C US and Hong Kong,
arranged by two major investment banks respectively. In New
York, Dr. Wang held more than 20 one-on-one meetings with investors,
plus two dinner group meetings. In San Francisco, 5 one-on-one
meetings and 1 dinner group were conducted. In Hong Kong, Dr.
Wang saw a few investors at 1 one-on-one meeting and one lunch
group. Throughout the road shows, Dr. Wang met more than 50
fund managers and analysts from major institutes including big
names like Wellington Management, Fidelity Management &
Research, and Boston Company Asset Management.
Below are a few categories of major TD-SCDMA related interest
points from the international financial market:
- After the telco restructuring, what are the new competition
landscape, operators¡¯ tactics, Capex and return, etc.
- Pro and cons of the asymmetric regulations for individual
operators, and resulting impact on operator competency.
- Maturity level of TD-SCDMA as compared to other counterpart
3G technologies, multi-mode and roaming, the user ramp-up
plan for TD-SCDMA, evolutions, smooth upgrades, relations
between TD-SCDMA and TD-LTE.
- Status of TD-SCDMA supply chain and individual company¡¯s
upside prospect, possibilities and opportunities for tier-one
international handset makers to join the supply chain to alleviate
the gap between TD-SCDMA and WCDMA terminals.
There are no definitive answers for all questions, of course.
Dr. Wang listened to what the investors had to say - their views,
concerns, and even questionings. He provided status update of
basic TD-SCDMA facts that are happening in China. In addition,
he offered his views in terms of future trends and possibilities
in relation to TD-SCDMA and its operators and suppliers. In
exchange for a sequence of exhaustive meetings, Dr. Wang was
happy to learn from the two investment banks that most of their
fund clients are very appreciative of the meetings, regarding
the meetings as informative and objective. Their clients indicated
that they are more positive about TD-SCDMA¡¯s future in China
or even outside China, and are more optimistic about the companies
that operate and manufacture the TD-SCDMA.
A detailed road show report will be submitted by the TD-SCDMA
Forum to government regulators and the senior / director member
companies as a reference in regulatory decisions and business
decisions.
