Dr.
Jing Wang, TD Forum Acting Secretary General
attended 2007 Mobility World Congress and Exhibition On Dec.3-6, 2007 Mobility World Congress & Exhibition was held in Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center. The conference explored issues of common interest in the telecom industry. 2007 Mobility World has attracted delegates from telecom carriers, equipment and service providers and organizations in other related industries, such as semi-conductor product manufacturers, content providers, entertainment companies, service and software distributors, industry organizations, government bodies and market research firms, etc.
TD-SCDMA Forum is one of the key partners in organizing the conference. Dr. Jing Wang, acting Secretary-General of TD Forum attended the conference. He was invited to attend the panel discussion -Mobile Broadband Deployments- as a guest speaker. Other guest speakers in the panel discussion were Ed Chao, VP of Alcatel-Lucent product management dept., Hideo Okinaka, KDDI vice president and Mike Robey from Telstra. Issues explored in the panel discussion included TD-SCDMA trial networks; TD business model and commercialization, billing mechanism of TD network, etc. Firstly, Dr. Wang reviewed the previous TD-SCDMA network trials. He said, TD-SCDMA has no fatal problems in terms of the technology itself. What we need to do is to commercialize the technology. China is very cautious in launching TD-SCDMA services, for no country in the world has ever tried to operate the TD-SCDMA service before. We need to conduct large-scale network trials to test the stability and reliability, etc. and involve a quantity of testers in the trail in an effort to get a better understanding of the TD service. Trials and testing is also important for the chipset and terminal makers. The 2008 Beijing Olympic will be a good testing bed for the TD technology and services. When talked about the TD coverage, Wang said, TD will be launched first in major cities in China. It will complement the 2G services at the beginning. Users will be roaming around the country for voice service. High speed data services will be available in major cities. Such situation will last for several years before TD network being expanded to cover the whole nation. 3G will bring us more diversified data applications, Dr. Wang pointed out. But none of these applications can be as popular as the SMS. Service providers need to target different market segments. So we need to study the vertical market instead of the horizontal market. And work out the business approach of TD-SCDMA services. In addition, Dr. Wang accepted the interview of Bloomberg
on issues of TD development in China, possible TD services in the
2008 Beijing Olympics and whether China will deploy 4G ahead of
the schedule, etc.
