TD-SCDMA Forum Seminar on TD Terminal Vs. Commercialization

TD-SCDMA Forum

TD-SCDMA is being deployedin ten cities in China. TD-SCDMA terminal industry has attracted more and more attention.. To facilitate better communications between terminal manufacturers and telecom operators, TD Forum hosted a seminar on TD-SCDMA terminal and commercialization on September 7 2007 in Beijing.

The participants include experts from operators , i.e. China Mobile, China Telecom, China Netcom. Audience also came from R&D institutions, market research firms and TD Forum member organizations. Delegates explored key issues in TD-SCDMA terminal development, such as its functions and performances, TD -SCDMA feature services, business models and market strategies of TD-SCDMA terminal industry, TD-SCDMA customized services and the development of TD-SCDMA terminal supply chain etc.

Dr. Jing Wang, acting Secretary-General of the TD-SCDMA Forum reviewed history of 3G development. He said terminal is a determinant factor in TD-SCDMA commercialization. After eight years of hard work, TD-SCDMA has made tremendous progress. Challenges TD-SCDMA has to face today are more about the market and users, rather than technology itself. How to improve production capacity and enhance the whole industry chain? What business model to adopt? And what can we do to help users accept TD-SCDMA? Most challenges come from the market and users. Only a strong TD industry chain can solve all these problems. We need to explore experience in 3G development and avoid possible mistakes in TD terminal development. We expect more main-stream terminal manufacturers to invest in TD-SCDMA. Positive interaction between market and industry players can better facilitate healthy development of the industry.

Nie Neng, President of CYIT outlined the future TD-SCDMA terminal, he said: ¡°According to China Mobile¡¯s description in its TD-SCDMA terminal tender, power consumption and stability of expected TD-SCDMA terminals should be similar to GSM terminals. Bandwidth should be large enough to accommodate HSDPA functions, video functions, MBMS functions etc. TD/GSM dual-mode dual standby is a must and dual-mode single standby with auto handover (including GPRS/EDGE) will be a plus.¡±

Most terminal manufacturers believe stability and high-end applications are key elements in TD-SCDMA commercial terminals. And stability is the first thing consumers think about when choosing a TD-SCDMA terminal. ¡°TD chipset makers should guarantee the stability of chipset and telecom services, while terminal manufacturers should focus on stability of application platforms.¡± said Wang Kailong, vice president of TCL research.

CCTIME CEO Mr. Xiang Ligang said: ¡°Stability is a basic factor in choosing TD-SCDMA terminals, and high-end application is an incentive.¡± Manufacturers need to improve stability of TD terminals and develop high-end applications to grab its share in the forthcoming TD terminal bid.¡±

High-end applications made HSDPA a must in TD-SCDMA terminals. Single carrier HSDPA functions are available in the TD-SCDMA network currently under construction. Its theoretical transmission speed topped 2.8Mbps. Lou Wenping, manager of T3G system infrastructure Dept. said, ¡°Transmission speed of WCDMA HSDPA is up to 14.4Mbps.¡± In his point of view, TD terminals which support three-carrier HSDPA functions will be important in TD-SCDMA long-term development.

When talked about what incentive applications TD terminals could provide, Wang Ting, Senior engineer of Huawei Technologies terminal dept. said, with the development of Internet web2.0, users are more involved and contribute more to the Internet contents. Services feature sharing characteristics will become an important part in 3G content.

Dr. Li Weichong, Vice President of Accenture (Great China) chaired the roundtable discussion. He shared his knowledge and experiences with delegates in issues like how will terminal industry drive up 3G industry development, TD terminal performance and functional parameters, TD featured services, business model and market strategy of TD terminal industry, customized TD services, how to forge a big and strong TD terminal industry chain etc. The GSM market is rather mature while TD-SCDMA still needs further improvement. TD-SCDMA needs to survive and grow stronger in such market conditions. Challenges in developing high quality TD-SCDMA terminals lies in the following: 1. how to develop TD mobiles with differentiated appearance; 2. how to accommodate antennas of different bands in one handset; 3. how to set up and optimize interfaces between processors and telecom modules; 4. how to lower power consumption; 5. how to realize interconnections between terminals; 6. which business model to adopt. Lowering power consumption and accommodating multiple antennas in one handset may become bottlenecks in TD terminal development. The coexistence of multiple antennas in 3G terminals is not an easy task. It means the harmony of 3G network, mobile TV service, location service, Bluetooth etc.

In his closing remarks, Dr. Jing Wang said, TD Forum is a good platform to promote TD-SCDMA commercialization. We will provide more opportunities for industry players to communicate about issues of their common interest.
